Understanding Herniated Disc

What It Is & Why It Happens

A herniated disc happens when the soft inner core of a spinal disc pushes through a tear in the tougher outer layer, often pressing on a nearby nerve. The result can be back pain, neck pain, radiating pain down an arm or leg, numbness, tingling, or weakness. Most people are told their options are anti-inflammatories, injections, or surgery. None of those rebuild the disc.

At The Roots Health Centers, we use FDA-cleared spinal decompression therapy to take pressure off the affected disc and create the negative pressure needed to draw fluid, oxygen, and nutrients back into the disc — which is how discs actually heal. We pair decompression with corrective chiropractic to address the structural cause and red light therapy to reduce inflammation and accelerate cellular repair.

Most herniated disc patients respond well to this combined approach. Many avoid surgery entirely. The earlier you address it — before the herniation calcifies or causes lasting nerve damage — the better the long-term outcome.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, in most cases. Spinal decompression creates negative pressure inside the disc, which pulls fluid, oxygen, and nutrients back into the disc — the conditions discs need to heal. Combined with corrective chiropractic and inflammation control, the majority of disc herniations respond well without surgery.

MRI findings don't always correlate with pain or outcomes. We've helped patients with significant herniations recover fully without surgery — and we've seen patients with mild MRI findings struggle. The exam, your symptoms, and your response to early care matter more than the imaging alone.
